FAQs
  • What is Ear Wax
Earwax, also known as cerumen, is a waxy substance naturally produced by glands in the ear canal. It serves a vital role in protecting and maintaining the health of the ear. Earwax helps trap dust, dirt, and other particles, preventing them from reaching the sensitive inner ear. Additionally, it possesses antibacterial and lubricating properties, keeping the ear canal moisturised and preventing dryness and irritation.
  • Why might ear wax need removing?
Earwax typically doesn't require routine removal as it serves important functions in protecting the ear. However, there are situations where earwax may need to be removed: Earwax Blockage: Sometimes, earwax can accumulate and form a blockage, leading to symptoms like earache, hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), or a feeling of fullness in the ear. In such cases, removing the excess wax can help restore normal hearing and alleviate discomfort. Impacted Earwax: When earwax becomes impacted, it means it is tightly packed and unable to naturally move out of the ear. This can occur due to factors like narrow ear canals, excessive wax production, or improper cleaning methods. Impacted earwax can cause significant hearing loss and may require professional removal. Preparation for Ear Examination: If a healthcare professional needs to examine the ear canal or perform diagnostic procedures, such as a tympanometry or ear irrigation, it may be necessary to remove any excessive earwax that could obstruct the view or interfere with the procedure.
  • What is Microsuction?
Microsuction is a safe and effective method used for removing excess earwax and blockages from the ear canal. It involves using a specialised device called a microsuction probe, which gently and precisely suctions out the accumulated earwax. Unlike traditional ear syringing, which involves flushing water into the ear, microsuction is a dry procedure that minimises the risk of discomfort or complications. By utilising magnification and illumination, healthcare professionals can perform microsuction with enhanced accuracy, ensuring a thorough and gentle cleaning of the ear. It is a widely recommended technique for individuals who experience wax build-up, blockages, or discomfort in their ears, providing quick relief and restoring optimal hearing.
  • Do I need to soften the wax before my visit?
Prior to the appointment you will be advised to apply olive oil preferably EAROL, two drops/sprays, two times a day for 3 - 5 days. This helps soften the wax ready for ear wax removal.
  • Does ear wax removal hurt?
The procedure is unlikely to be painful. The main thing that patients will notice is the sound of the suction probe, which you’ll soon become used to. We use extra fine tips for the suction of any ear wax very close to the drum to avoid excessive exposure to suction noise.
  • How long does the procedure take?
Microsuction on both ears typically takes 20 minutes. To ensure the procedure is performed efficiently, it is important to stay as still as possible. The ear canal is small and close to the eardrum, so even small movements can blur the image and prolong the procedure.
  • Can I have Microsuction done on a perforated eardrum?
Microsuction is the safest way to remove earwax for people with certain ear conditions. These conditions include hearing loss, tinnitus, a perforated eardrum, grommets, previous ear surgery, mucous discharge from the ear, acute otitis externa, or a foreign body in the ear.
  • What other services do you offer?
Under certain Circumstances it may be necessary to use irrigation (traditionally known as syringing). This will be assessed and discussed at the appointment.
  • How much does Microsuction ear wax removal cost?
At any of the clinics, a standalone ear screening and hearing test is priced at £35. If excess wax is detected, the cost is £50 for one ear or £55 for both ears. For home visits, the fee is £65, with an additional charge for mileage if you reside outside a 15-mile radius from our clinic in Wreay.
  • Can children have Microsuction?
Microsuction is a gentle and effective way to remove earwax in young children. Children should be at least 6 years old and able to lie still for 20 minutes to undergo microsuction. If your child is younger or less cooperative, we can use other instruments to remove the earwax.
